Shaykh Muhammad The Poem
Plate 72. Persia, circa 1600,
Koechlin Collection, Paris.
La Miniature En Orient by Ernst
Kuhnel 1925
Translator's Note:
This is a familiar style for
Shaykh Muhammad. Of course the pose, the sash,
the headgear, the pen and knife, are very close
to the Freer "Prince with a Parakeet".
However this piece has the same treatment to the
eyes as Atil describes in the Freer drawing.
Please note the heavy eyelids with the outline of
the eye extending past the outline of the face.
The copy I am working from is not good enough to
say for sure but there is what appears to be a
signature below the figure under the pen and
knife in the same spot as the signature in the
Freer drawing. I must wonder if this is the
Louvre piece that Atil discusses in "The
Brush of the Master".1.
