This is an unusually evocative fragment which
leaves the viewer wishing for more and trying to
imagine the rest of the rug. The large craggy
serrated yellow and blue corners here mark a
delineation between the field and the spandrels
in a uniquely brazen manner. The spandrels in
green and aubergine and dotted with stylized
blossoms remind us of other Turkish village rugs
such as those of the Konya rug in the Christopher
Alexander collection (see Alexander, C., p. 169);
and several rugs in the Vakiflar Museum, Istanbul
which are attributed to Eastern Anatolia (see
Balpinar and Hirsch, 1988, pls. 25, 26, 27.) The
present rug also shares a pendant medallion with
the cited Vakiflar rugs, however, the shapes of
them are quite different. The zigzag, striped
line which demarcates the area between medallion
and spandrels is an equally unusual feature. This
fragment offers us luminous color in a design
which intrigues and puzzles and yet ultimately
appeals to our aesthetic sense. |
