3 by 5 Unusual Turkmen

This is a very unusual Turkmen rug in a variety of ways. The shape is very unusual because the top corners are flatweave and the rest is pile. Some call this a prayer rug, or a cradle or all sorts of things. One discussion board on the Internet even went as far as to call rugs of this shape "Salanchaks".

The construction is very unusual. This is single wefted which is rare but seen in Turkmen rugs. The back is flat with virtually no warp depression. The construction is even but not as mechanical as a workshop rug.

How We Select Our Rugs

Structure: Asymmetrical knot open left. 10 knots per horizontal inch and 11 knots per vertical inch. 110 per square inch (1705 per square decimeter).

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 3 ply wool, tan.

Weft: Cotton, gray.

Pile: 2 Wool singles.

Ends: Top - 1/2 to 7 inches warp faced plain weave, warp fringe. Bottom - Warp fringe.

Selvages: 2 cord selvage wrapped in brown wool.
