Dennis Dodds is one of the people
in the field of Oriental rugs that I really
admire. From the time I started getting
interested in Oriental rugs Dodds was very open
to helping a new collector. I have attended his
presentations at the Textile Museum and I was
always impressed. |

Stewardship in Islamic Textiles to Dennis Dodds,
President of the Organizing Committee of the
Philadelphia Eighth International Conference on
Oriental Carpets, Inc.

| Trained as an architect and
urban designer with two advanced degrees from the
University of Pennsylvania, Dennis Dodds became
an internationally recognized collector, author,
lecturer, appraiser and consultant in the field
of Oriental rugs. He was founding American Editor
of HALI The
International Magazine of Antique Carpet &
Textile Art, published in London, was
consultant to Christie's New York and received
the McMullan Award for
Scholarship and Stewardship in Islamic Art from
the Near East Art Research Center in Washington,
DC. He lectures around the world and writes
extensively on the subject. In 1985, he
pioneered the development of innovative carpet
supplements for the nation's leading design and
shelter magazines, including Architectural
Digest, Interior Design, and Design Times--the
Art of Interiors. These supplements, seen by
millions of readers, have contributed
significantly to the popularization and growth of
the Oriental rug industry.

Long a volunteer for the
International Conference on Oriental Carpets
(ICOC) -- www.icoc-orientalrugs.org --
he was elected in 1999 to the leadership position
of Secretary General. Devoted to promoting a
broader public awareness and appreciation of
Oriental and decorative carpets, Dennis continues
his work in architecture and as a pre-eminent
consultant and dealer in rare rugs, bringing the
art of these products to collectors, interior
designers, architects and design-conscious
consumers.

The Dodds "stand at
the Los Angeles Antiques Show and displays our wide range
of top quality antique carpets and textiles.
From left to right:
1. France or Italy, 17c, remarkable silk satin stitch
embroidered tapestry w/ all-over pattern of scrolling
acanthus, lacking lower border.
2. Rare Turkmen juval w/chevron design, possibly Eagl-gol
type, mid-19c. One of one very few known.
3. An outstanding Imperial Chinese silk velvet and gold
embroidered panel, Ming Dynasty, early 17c, w/ Dragon
roundel and Buddhist imagery.
4. On of a pair of wonderful Western Chinese Buddhist
temple wall panels, 1800-50, rare frontal aspect of
writhing Dragons, 2.6X8.6.
5. A highly important Chinese Imperial textile
floorcovering, silk velvet and metal brocade, Late Ming
or K'ang Hsi, 17c, 8.6X12, lacking one border.
6. The second of a pair of Buddhist temple Dragon panels.
7. A fine Turkish Milas prayer rug w/ pale aubergine
border, c. 1850.
8. A dramatic and exemplary Turkish kilim carpet, 5.6X12,
w/ 3 bold geometric medallions, Karaman region, c.
1825-50.
9. On the floor is an unusual oval French Aubusson
tapestry-woven carpet in beige with pastel, monochromatic
tones, 10X13, c. 1875-90.
