If I lost it I would not replace it.

Of some use but not one I would go out of my way to find.

Useful.

Very useful and one I would recommend strongly.

A very important or even the definitive work on the subject. It does not have to be perfect but if I give it 5 stars and you are interested in that area then you should own a copy.

Not Yet Rated - I haven't gotten to it yet so if you wish to review it please feel free. There is a limit to how many books I can read so it it is not rated do not assume anything is wrong with the book. de Toledano, Ralph, Spies, Dupes, and Diplomats. New Rochelle: Arlington House, 1967.

Exciting writing that documents the infiltration of our Government by the Communists. The book deals with Owen Lattimore but stops short of labeling him a spy and paints him as a dupe. Lattimore was America's preeminent expert on Central Asia and had a key role in selling America out to the Red Chinese. Lattimore was also a blatant and viscous anti-Semite.

Diehr, Frank Martin. ed. Treasured Baluch Pieces. 1997.

Guest Reviewer - Mark Hopkins

In an Email Mark Quoted his Review in Hali (#96 page 109) "This is a sincere book, honest, unpretentious and dedicated. And it is an important contribution to the field [of Baluch writings] that serves both as a primer for the freshman collector, and as a warm and friendly addition to the expert's library."

Mark then added "I would definitely give the book as many stars as you have available." Baluch Rugs

Dilley, Arthur Urbane Revised by Dimand, M. S. Ph. D. Oriental Rugs and Carpets. Philadelphia & New York: J. B. Lippincott Co, 3rd edition 1959.

Too dated and I have not been able to relate this book to my studies so I do not use it often. Dilley's floral prose is a bit much. Not nearly as useful as Dimand's Handbook.

Dimand, Maurice S. Ph. D. A Handbook of Muhammadan Art. New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, third edition, 1958.

While this book is in some ways dated and the title is no longer considered politically correct this is a book I return to over and over. Professor Dimand has a grasp of the overall scheme of Islamic art that is all too lacking in most rug authors. Islamic Art

Dimand, Maurice S. and Jean Mailey. Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1973.

This book is one of the classics on Classic Carpets. Professor Dimand brrings to the table an understanding of Islamic art that gives him a deep insight into the carpets. This combined with the depth of the Met collection makes this a great read.

This is an important early book that went a long way towards straightening out the error that Polonaise carpets are Polish. Of course it spawned it's own problems such as the attribution to Isfahan and Persia. Many of the best Polonaise carpets are definitively Mughal on a structural basis.

Dobson, Christopher, and Payne, Ronald. The Terrorists. New York: Facts on File. 1987,

A wee bit hard on those gallant Irish freedom fighters (definite British bias) and rather dated. How one can include the IRA and ignore the SAS strains the credibility. When the British government ordered the SAS to murder civilians with out so much as a judge or trial they exceeded the worst the poor Irish everr committed. ordered the SAS to murder . The face of Terrorism changes rapidly and this book has seen it's day pass. Terrorism.

Dodds, Dennis R. Oriental Rugs The Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Robert A. Fisher in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Richmond: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,1985.

Very sound, solid, scholarship from Dennis Dodds. The Fisher Collection is a treasure trove of village and tribal pieces that will only grow in importance as the years go by. Excellent structural analyses and attributions from Dodds,

Doubleday, Veronica. Three Women of Herat. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1988.

Doubleday lived in Herat and this is the story of her interaction with some of the local women. She is not an anthropologist so it falls short of Dr. Lois Beck's visits with the Qashqai but is more in depth than a mere tourist book. This is a help to try to understand the Herati culture.

Dovodov, N. and Khodzhamukhamedov N. Carpets and Carpet Products of Turkmenistan. Ashkhabad (?). Turkmen Carpet Company, U.S.S.R., 1983

This may be the worst rug book in terms of picture quality I have ever seen. This even makes Oriental Rugs Volume 1 by Bennett look wonderful in comparison. The book is in three languages and I can only read the English part. The rest looks like Russian and Uzbek. When you get past the picture quality Dovodov and Khodzhamukhamedov have done a good job. Not my first choice but I do use this book when I an searching for clues to attribution. Turkmen Rugs

Dupree, Louis. Afghanistan. Oxford Univ Press (May 1, 1997). 1 Ed edition Princeton: Princeton Univ Press, (December 1973)

From Lloyd Kannenberg:

"One of the most useful books I have ever come across on Afghanistan is called just "Afghanistan". It is by the late Louis Dupree, and it covers all things Afghan, including history until about 10 minutes before the Soviet invasion in 1980. Really really good! And recently reprinted, in paperback, by Oxford University Press. By the way, Dupree's wife wrote the definitive tourist guide to pre-Taliban Afghanistan, but it is impossible to find a copy."
