JBOC's Notes on Oriental Rugs

Oriental Rug Books Authors Beginning with L

If I lost it I would not replace it.

Of some use but not one I would go out of my way to find.

Useful.

Very useful and one I would recommend strongly.

A very important or even the definitive work on the subject. It does not have to be perfect but if I give it 5 stars and you are interested in that area then you should own a copy.

Not Yet Rated - I haven't gotten to it yet so if you wish to review it please feel free. There is a limit to how many books I can read so it is not rated do not assume anything is wrong with the book. If you disagree with any of my opinions write me and I may annotate this list with your comments.

A very important  book written on Turkish tribal weaving.

Lamb, Harold. Genghis Khan The Emperor of All Men. New York: Robert M. McBride & Co, 1926.

Lamb writes a great book. The problem is that he does not document what his sources were. This is a problem in that he adds some details that no one else notes. He obviously used some very solid early sources but I suspect that he may have embellished a little to make it more readable. One case in point is that he has more detail about the Khan's time in Afghanistan but no one else ever mentions the details of camp life in the Hindu Kush. So I must ask what is his source.

Leach writes a very scholarly book. The book is a valuable source of information on Indian Miniature painting. The book is geared to examine the Cleveland Museum Collection and as such is not geared to someone who is looking for information on particular artists. This valuable reference would be even more valuable with an index. Indian/Mughal Art. Lib

Lowery, Glenn D. and Lentz, Thomas W. Timur and the Princely Vision. Washington DC: Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Smithsonian Institution, University of Washington Press, 1989.

One of the very best books on Islamic Art. The best book on Timurid art. Not as adventurous as some on attributions the books stands up well as a solid useful book. If you are really interested in Timurid Art you need this book.

Lowery, Glenn D. and Nemazee Susan. A Jeweler's Eye. Washington DC: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1988.

A limiting factor is that it is one man's collection and in some manner it reflects that. However it is a good resource on some important miniatures. The authors do an excellent job. Lib
