If I lost it I would not replace it.

Of some use but not one I would go out of my way to find.

Useful.

Very useful and one I would recommend strongly.

A very important or even the definitive work on the subject. It does not have to be perfect but if I give it 5 stars and you are interested in that area then you should own a copy.

Pahlavi, Mohammad Reza. Answer To History. New York: Stein and Day,Publishers, 1980.

In the years to come we will gain far more honest and insightful looks at the Pahlavid dynasty. This is not of great value.

"Painting and Sculpture From the Samuel H. Kress Collection", Washington DC: National Gallery of Art Smithsonian Institution, 1959.

Not much to recommend this one for this list but there are a few rugs. Plate 1150 has a Turkish rug. K185 has a Turkish rug. Il. 1114 has a very nice Herat type in a seventeenth century French painting.

Pal, Pratapaditya. Indian Painting. Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum Of Art, 1993.

Dr. Pal does a nice job with this book but the collection he is documenting does not have a wide assortment of Mughal art. Although it does have some very good pieces including plates 63 by Miskin. The one disappointing aspect of the book is the commentary on plate 65. Pal notes Canby attributes the painting to Manohar and that S. C. Welch attributed the the picture to Bichtir in about 1603. Pal then attributes the piece to the Allahabad studio of Prince Selim 1600 - 1604. The disquieting part is that he leaves the other two attributions dangle because obviously Manohar was no where near Allahabad in 1600 - 1604 and 1603 is far to early for Bichtir to have produced such a work. I felt the section calls for more clarification than Pal offers and I have to wonder if he quoted Welch correctly in the 1603 Bichtir attribution.

I suppose as long as I am at it I have to take exception to the discussion of plate 64 as well. I do not think we can assume that figural silk must be Iranian on the basis of a notation of presents received by Humayun. That Humayan was once given figural silk does not eliminate the possibility that Indian sources were established in the 50 years in between the quote and this picture. We know India produced silk cloth during that period we know that Akbar had designers who worked with designs for textiles, and additionally we know that Akbar had a personal wealth and annual income that is virtually incomprehensible to the average person. Additionally if we compare the coat in question with the tent we see in Okada, Amina. Indian Miniatures of the Mughal Court. Translated by Deke Dusinberre, (New York, Harry N. Abrahms, Inc. Publishers, 1992).Page 135 Plate 149 as compared to what we see from Kashan and Yazd at the time Pal's comments do not appear to hold up. I might also add that the wealth of the Mughal elite was so vast as to make ludicrous the notion that young princes ran around in hand me down clothing from their grandfather. particularly since we know that artistic expression in silk was at a high state at that time. Since I am at it to a lesser extent plate 75 suffers from the same problem. Perhaps I do not really like this book but the pictures are excellent and Dr. Pal certainly makes me think.

In fairness as I reread this I have to wonder if I am just too dumb to get Dr. Pal's point. It is rather arrogant to assume that if one reads a few books in the field that he knows more than the experts in the field.

An interesting and highly readable popularization of Ottoman history. At times I look for footnotes and more dates but it is a good book such as it is.

The only useful part for me is the part on prehistoric man and sheep. That part was actually rather interesting.

Pickering, Brooke, Pickering, W. Russell, Yohe, Ralph S. "Moroccan Carpets". Washington DC. Near Eastern Art Research Center, 1977.

If you are interested in Moroccan carpets you should definitely have this book. This is by far the best book on the subject and the best book by Russell Pickering. The pictures are fantastic. I have seen the rugs in this book in person and the pictures in the book are dead on accurate. The interspersing of pictures, text, and white space is masterful. Hali was involved in this book and it has the Hali look and the Alan Marcuson's masterful touch is very evident. Danny Shaffer is the editor and he does a great job. The book is easy to read and understand. Moroccan Rugs

Pickering, W. Russell. "don't forget to smell the flowers along the way". Washington DC. Near Eastern Art Research Center, 1977.

The legendary collector Willian Russell Pickering the "American Pasha" examines the life of a legendary collector (McMullan). Any rug collector can learn a lot from the interviews of those who knew McMullan best. Some of the real gems are the interviews with Richard Ettinghausen, Walter Denny, Arthur Jenkins, McCoy Jones, Charlie Ellis, Irene Emory, Ralph Yohe, Harold Keshishian, Raoul Tschebull, and many others. If these names are not familiar to you then you really should buy the book because they should be.

This is perhaps the single most important book written on Flat-woven rugs. This book helped popularize a previously ignored area of ethnic weaving.

Many of these articles are from papers presented at the 1986 ICOC in Vienna. Two articles were of special interest to me: I really enjoyed MacAllen's article on the English East India Company and Azadi on the Goklan Turkoman. MacAllen was easy to accept and Azadi makes some interesting points but leaves me wondering. General Rug Book

I loved this book. It is such a major find that I am willing to forgive it for not being in English. So as I wade through it it just seems as though there should be an English translation. It contains a treasure trove of obscure Shiarzi and Turanian miniatures. Generally I feel a little uncomfortable with the majority of scholarship I see from the old Soviet Empire but this one seems extremely solid. text in Russian, Uzbek, and French.

Pope Arthur U: Ackerman, Phyllis. (Editor) An Introduction to Persian Art Since the Seventh Century A.D. Mazda Publishers 1980.

Perhaps the single most important work on Persian art. Pope assembled a 16 volume work that covers an enormous span or the Persian artistic triumph. certainly not perfect but merely assembling the work is a triumph and a starting place for further work. There are two volumes on rugs which can be purchased seperately since the set costs abot $1500.

A very important collection of rugs and sculpture from one of the elder statesmen of the rug world. The pictures are good and Price's taste is superb. One of the better collection catalogues that you can find. The catalogues one weakness is that it lacks detailed structural descriptions. In light of some attributions that are a touch surprising structure could help us to understand. A gift from W. Russell Pickering. General Rug Book
